Bob West and John Allen Chalk made presentations on April 16 and 17, 2010 as part of the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law Energy Symposium, Mr. West spoke on “Current Trends in Leasing” and Mr. Chalk spoke on “Having Your Cake and Condemning It Too: When Asserting the Power of Eminent Domain Constitutes Breach of an Oil and Gas Lease.” Both presentations will also be published as articles in the Texas Wesleyan Law Review Energy Symposium – 2010 publication.

Kathleen Knight has been named as a Life Fellow of the Tarrant County Bar Association.

Eric Camp, an attorney in Whitaker Chalk’s oil and gas section, has been admitted to the North Dakota State Bar. Camp will perform oil and gas title and transactional work for clients operating in the Bakken Shale.

Kathleen Knight has been named to serve on The State Bar of Texas Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee.

Eric Camp has been certified as a Registered Landman by the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL).

Kathleen Knight is now a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas. The College of the State Bar of Texas is an honorary society of lawyers who are among the best trained attorneys in Texas. Members are qualified attorneys who are interested in both high ethical standards and improved training for all Texas attorneys.

James P. George, of counsel to Whitaker Chalk and professor of law at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, has written an article, When to Appeal – Making a Business Decision, published in the September 2009 issue of the Fort Worth Basin Oil & Gas Journal.

Sadie Harrison-Fincher, a Whitaker Chalk attorney, has written an article, City Regulation of Pipelines – An Overview of Ordinance No. 18449-02-2009, published in the August 2009 issue of the Fort Worth Basin Oil & Gas Journal.

Stephen S. Mosher, a patent attorney with Whitaker Chalk, has written an article, Patenting an Invention, in the July 2009 issue of the Fort Worth Basin Oil and Gas Journal.

Kirk Bryant, an oil and gas attorney for Whitaker Chalk, has written an article, Fifty Years After the Deed, Whose Gas Is It, published in the June 2009 issue of the Fort Worth Basin Oil & Gas Journal.

John Allen Chalk has been named the 2009 Law Good Scout Award recipient by the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Chalk will be honored by the Longhorn Council at a September 17, 2009 luncheon at the Fort Worth Club, Fort Worth, Texas. Each year the Longhorn Council honors a lawyer for his or her distinguished community service.

John Allen Chalk has been certified as a mediator by the International Mediation Institute, The Hague, Netherlands (“IMI”). IMI is an international public policy initiative by the Netherlands Mediation Institute, the Singapore Mediation Centre/Singapore International Arbitration Centre, and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution/American Arbitration Association to certify mediators experienced in the resolution of international commercial disputes.

John Allen Chalk has recently been appointed to the Arbitration Panel of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London (UK). Chalk holds the designations of Fellow and Chartered Arbitrator granted by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

John Allen Chalk became the President of the Tarrant County Bar Association on July 1, 2009. The Tarrant County Bar Association has approximately 2,900 members. Chalk will serve as TCBA President through June 30, 2010.

John Allen Chalk became the Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Texas on July 1, 2009. The State Bar of Texas ADR Section has approximately 1,400 members. Chalk will serve as Chair of the State Bar of Texas ADR Section Chair through June 30, 2010.

John Allen Chalk presented a paper, The Mediator as Conflict Manager, at the Association of Attorney-Mediators Advanced Attorney-Mediator Training, on April 24, 2009. The Association of Attorney-Mediators, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is an association of attorney-mediators from several states of the U.S. who are full-time mediators and dispute resolvers.

John Allen Chalk has been elected to the American Law Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The American Law Institute is the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. The Institute (made up of 4,000 lawyers, judges, and law professors of the highest qualifications) drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, model statutes, and principles of law that are enormously influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.

Bob West presented a paper entitled “Current Trends in Leasing” and Chalk and Harrison-Fincher presented a paper entitled “Eminent Domain Power Granted to Private Pipeline Companies.

John Allen Chalk and Rebecca K. Eaton prepared a White Paper on arbitration which was published by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Texas State Bar Association. John Allen Chalk has been elected to membership in the American Law Institute. The American Law Institute (ALI) was established in 1923 to promote the clarification and simplification of American common law and its adaptation to changing social needs. The ALI drafts, approves, and publishes Restatements of the Law, model codes, and other proposals for law reform. ALI membership is limited to 3,000 elected members who are judges, lawyers, and law teachers from all areas of the United States and from many foreign countries.

John Allen Chalk has been named by the Fort Worth Business Press as one of “Twelve Power Attorneys-2008.” (October 2008)

John Allen Chalk has been named by Law Business Research, Ltd., London, U.K. as “Who’s Who Legal – Texas 2008.” Chalk was selected for his work as an arbitrator and his representation of parties in arbitration. This is the second time that Law Business Research, Ltd. has selected Chalk to “Who’s Who Legal – Texas” based on his arbitration work.

John Allen Chalk has been named a “Master” of the Eldon B. Mahon Inn of Court for a five-year term beginning August 2008. The Mahon Inn of Court is affiliated with the American Inns of Court and offers younger lawyers opportunities for professional growth and development by interactive professional relationships with more experienced lawyers.

John Allen Chalk has been appointed to another term on the ADR Task Force for the American Health Lawyers Association to serve from July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009. The AHLA ADR Task Force advises and recommends policies and procedures for the AHLA ADR Service which provides alternative dispute resolution services to AHLA members nationwide

John Allen Chalk has been elected President-Elect of the Tarrant County Bar Association for 2008-2009. He will serve as President of the Tarrant County Bar Association for 2009-2010. The Tarrant County Bar Association has approximately 2,600 lawyers as members and is one of the most active local bar associations in Texas.

May 2, 2008 - Whitaker Chalk announces that two of its lawyers were named Texas Rising Stars 2008: Hunter T. McLean for Intellectual Property Litigation, and William B. Shellhorse for Appellate. Shellhorse was also named a Texas Rising Star for 2007, 2005, and 2004.

Whitaker Chalk is please to announce the addition of two attorneys, Robin O'Day Dettmer, and Rebecca K. Eaton. Robin comes to the firm as an experienced litigatior in the areas of commercial and securities litigation, products liability/toxic tort defense, bankruptcy, legal malpractice defense, and insurance defense. Rebecca graduated cum laude from Texas Wesleyan School of Law in 2007, and will be working in the areas of litigation, corporate and business law, school law, and regulatory compliance.
